Things to be shocked about

November 10, 2015

In life

There are some things to be shocked about, and

some things not to be shocked about.

*

When the Mormon church created this policy,

where they confirmed same-sex marriage as apostasy

I assessed that was something that was expected, and

some thing not to be shocked about.

*

When the Mormon church created this policy,

that would also apply to the children of a parent in a same-sex relationship

At first,

I felt that was some thing to be shocked about.

But then,

I realized this was some thing to be disappointed about, but

some thing not to be shocked about.

*

When the disaffected Mormons criticized this policy,

but also criticized that anyone could be shocked by it,

they said it was in the Church’s nature

A viper that bites you when you pick it up,

they argued, is some thing to be angry about, yet

some thing not to be shocked about.

*

When some faithful Mormons struggled with this policy,

but more struggled with how they could remain faithful

they knew that leaving was not within their nature

An imperfect institution that steps on toes,

they realized,

is neither something to act rashly about, nor

some thing not to be shocked about.

*

When other faithful Mormons had no struggle with this policy,

and they called it inspired,

and they criticized the faithful Mormons who struggled with this policy,

and called them disaffected,

vipers in the midst of the sheep,

I knew

that some thing could be expected,

some thing could be disappointing and

something to be angry about,

something potentially to act rashly about, and also

some thing to be shocked about.
