Where should one look for religious self-discovery?
I’ve been playing around with this idea of religious search and religious self-discovery…especially for people who have left religious communities of their upbringing. So often, these people want to go on “world tour” to find the right religion for them. As if the religion of their community is off-limits.
Sometimes, they unwittingly enter a huge loop and end up where they began. But it would be irresponsible of me if I acted as if that’s what always happens. Sometimes, people leave and they are out for good.
I guess I can see arguments for and against. Familiarity breeds contempt, as the saying goes. Maybe it’s necessary to put on a different thinking cap to be able to find the value of the first perspective?
At the same time, part of me wants to say, “If you’re pining for religious self-discovery, then you should exhaust every nook of your own home first.” After all, that’s your community…you’ve already got resources and you don’t even have to go anywhere to find them.
